One thing I ask from the LORD,

this only do I seek:

that I may dwell in the house of the LORD

all the days of my life,

to gaze on the beauty of the LORD. (Ps 27:4)

Although he was an imperfect and broken man, David also structured his life around this pursuit. No wonder he was described as “a man after [God’s] own heart” (1 Sam 13:14). David reflected what the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard called “purity of heart,” which is simply to will one thing.

Before we shrink back from the shadows of spiritual giants like David or Paul, we must remember that they were ordinary people with an exceptional God. The upward rhythm is an acknowledgment that each and every follower of Jesus shares this purpose: knowing Christ on the journey onward and upward toward him.

The focus of the upward rhythm is the cultivation of our own “one thing” focus, since we can have no stable or meaningful identity or vocation apart from knowing Jesus.
